Sheffield Wednesday have a few out of contract in 2025. But the club are hoping to secure fresh terms with one.
Sheffield Wednesday‘s thoughts and focus will be on the here and now, with Danny Rohl gradually getting his side up the standings.
After an impressive, dramatic win against Coventry City last time out, the Owls now sit in 15th place of the Championship table, compared to 20th for the September international break.
There’s been some impressive individual performers of late, including Barry Bannan who’s been nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award.
Elsewhere, fans and pundits are raving about Shea Charles who score the winning goal at Coventry City last weekend.
Rohl will be deeply impressed by what he’s seen over the last few weeks. The Owls were looking extremely poor beforehand, but time on the training ground is proving to be a real healer for Sheffield Wednesday right now.
Sheffield Wednesday eyeing new deal for Akin Famewo
Another name who’s been extremely impressive of late is centre-back Akin Famewo.
The 25-year-old isn’t often someone who draws praise at Hillsborough; in fact, last season he was someone who came under scrutiny more often than not.
But having started the last four Championship games now, Famewo is showcasing great skills and stability at the back.
He’s forming a nice partnership alongside Di’Shon Bernard amid what’s been a season of defensive selection issues for Rohl.
Famewo impressed against West Brom in particular, dominating several individual stats including touches of the ball and defensive actions on the day.
The former Norwich City man is out of contract in the summer of 2025, but The Star report that Sheffield Wednesday hope to secure a new deal for Famewo before the end of the year.
Akin Famewo playing his way to a new contract
Famewo has certainly been an unlikely performer for Sheffield Wednesday in the last few weeks, particularly in this back-five formation that’s currently serving the Owls well.
He’s calm and composed on the ball and a threat in the air and on the ground too.
He definitely suits the Rohl style of play and if he continues on this current vein of form, he’ll surely earn himself a new deal.
Earlier this season, Rohl revealed that contract talks are underway ahead of the New Year, with several others including Pol Valentin and Callum Paterson out of contract next summer.
With defenders thin on the ground, and Famewo still a relatively young player, a new deal for the Englishman would make a lot of sense.
