Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Middlesbrough have sacked head coach Michael Carrick. The former Manchester United midfielder leaves the Teesside outfit after a disappointing 2024/25 season.
The 43-year-old, who previously had a spell as United caretaker manager, had been in charge at Boro since October 2022 and led the team to the play-offs in his first year at the Riverside. But Boro have missed out on top-six finishes in the past two campaigns. A run of just one victory from their final six matches of the season just gone saw them finish 10th in the table, four points outside the play-off spots.
A statement from the club read, “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick. Michael’s assistants, Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick, have also departed the club.
“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
Former Nottingham Forest and Leicester City manager Steve Cooper is currently the favorite with the bookmakers to take over from Carrick, according to Casino Beats. Cooper, who steered Forest to the Premier League, is priced as the 5/2 favorite, with ex-Boro star Gary O’Neil closely behind at 3/1. O’Neil has managed at Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers and is currently looking for a new challenge following his Molineux exit last term
Carrick’s departure means that 17 of last season’s 24 Championship teams have changed managers since August. There remains a distinct possibility that Wednesday will be searching for a new boss in the near future, with Danny Röhl having hinted his future lies away from Hillsborough.
In an interview with German outlet Kicker last month, Röhl said, “Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future.
“And the Bundesliga is, of course, a consideration. My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now.”
