Sky Sports confirm transfer ‘talks’ between Celtic and out of contract Premier League left-back

Much of the Celtic news over the last few months has surrounded the future of Greg Taylor.

Taylor could play his last ever Celtic game in the Scottish Cup final, but Brendan Rodgers is still holding out hope that the left-back can sign a new contract.

His deal ends in the summer, and it has been reported that Celtic has always had an offer on the table for Taylor, but he is yet to agree to anything.

If Taylor goes, it means Celtic will have no senior left-backs in their squad with Jeffrey Schlupp’s loan from Crystal Palace set to expire.

Although Sky Sports has now dropped an interesting update over the future of Schlupp at Celtic.

Sky Sports deliver Jeffrey Schlupp Celtic update

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has stated that Celtic’s left-back search in the upcoming transfer window will depend on both Taylor’s and Schlupp’s respective situations.

Joseph has confirmed the Hoops are actually in talks with Schlupp over potentially extending his time at the club, which is highly possible given he is out of contract with Crystal Palace.

Clearly, there’s an appetite from Rodgers to deal in Schlupp—but as stated, Taylor’s future will play a factor in it.

Joseph wrote, “The left-back hunt will depend on the futures of Greg Taylor and Jeffrey Schlupp, which will be decided after the cup final this weekend. It’s understood Hoops offered Taylor a new deal and left it up to the player.

“The club has been talking to Schlupp about the possibility of extending his stay in Glasgow. His loan expires in the summer—and so does his contract with Crystal Palace.

“If neither stays, Celtic will go into the market for another left-back.”

Celtic will compete with Leicester City for Schlupp

Celtic are not the only interested party in Schlupp’s future. The 32-year-old German-born defender appears to be attracting attention from his former club, Leicester City.

The Foxes have just been relegated from the Premier League, and they won’t be able to spend as freely in the EFL Championship—hence the feasibility of a deal to sign Schlupp for nothing.

Schlupp has made 17 appearances for the Hoops and provided some good competition for Taylor across the second half of the season.

He scored and assisted in the 5-2 away win over St Mirren and showed that he could compete, albeit in flashes, at Champions League level.

However, he was branded ‘lazy’ in defeat against St. Johnstone and hasn’t really had much of a look-in since that game in April.
