Southampton are putting a Saints star in the team in order to put him in the shop window for the approaching January transfer period, a club’s boss feels.
Russell Martin’s Southampton side are struggling in the Premier League and lost 2-0 away at Wolves before the international break, with Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha scoring for Gary O’Neil’s men.
Chasing the game, Martin brought on powerful striker Paul Onuachu at Molineux, but it did not help Saints find the back of the net.
The striker spent the entirety of the last campaign on loan at Trabzonspor, where he impressed and the Turkish side were interested in signing the Saints man this summer, but a deal could not be agreed.
He has been handed six appearances by Martin so far this season and Trabzonspor coach Senol Gunes has a theory as to why.
The Turkish side’s boss feels the Premier League side are playing Onuachu as they want to get a good price for the striker in January.
“He has problems with the English club. They wouldn’t loan him, they wouldn’t sell him”, Gunes said via Turkish outlet Gunebakis.
“They didn’t include him in the squad.
“In the last few weeks they’ve been putting him in the squad and putting him in matches, and they are doing that to market him.”
Trabzonspor retain an interest in signing Onuachu when the window opens again in January, but it is unclear what level of fee Saints would find acceptable.
