Depending on how you thought Leicester City would perform in the Premier League, the first four games have produced a mixed bag of thoughts so far.
An entertaining draw at home to Tottenham on the opening weekend was followed by consecutive 2-1 defeats to Fulham and Aston Villa. In Steve Cooper’s first three games in charge, City competed in all and certainly came away from the two home games feeling hard done by.
Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace was another tough example of the reality of Premier League football. Leicester were better than the Eagles in the first half and were worthy leaders. They won midfield duels, they were physical and they caused the likes of Marc Guehi issues.
The fact that the game ended level after Stephy Mavididi put Leicester 2-0 ahead in the second half meant it felt like a defeat at the full-time whistle. Criticism has been placed on Cooper’s ‘negative’ tactics to defend the lead, rather than match Palace, with some, bizarrely, already calling for his head.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course. That’s what football is all about. But question marks over the manager’s capability to keep the club in the Premier League after just four games does feel extremely premature.
I’d like to see Leicester expose their opponents by using the creativity in the squad. I also think attack is the best form of defence. But as Cooper explained, when Palace are substituting defenders for attackers to create chaos, you simply have to adapt to the circumstance.
Put simply, when Oliver Glasner took off Nathaniel Clyne and Daniel Munoz, two full-backs, for Daichi Kamada and Ismaila Sarr, City were coming up against a 3-5-3 with eight, or sometimes nine, piling forward. There’s only so much flexibility you can have with that.
Of course, having just four touches of the ball in Palace’s half is not good enough. If you’re going to attempt to defend a lead, your own build-up play has to be better to push forward and relieve the pressure. Saturday was a different scenario for Leicester, a lesson learned.
This week sees Everton visit the King Power Stadium. So early in the season, it’s a big game. Victory for Cooper’s men would add some breathing room between them and the bottom three but defeat would be a blow. The Toffees have lost all four of their Premier League games this season, squandering a 2-0 lead in their last two.
Tuesday night’s poor Carabao Cup defeat to Southampton pilled more pressure. I watched the game in an attempt to get a flavour of what to expect from Everton and they are struggling. A few minor pieces of quality from some players here and there, but overall, they are a team with no confidence.
The Foxes have reason to believe they can earn their first win of the season. However, there are some concerns that failure to do so will be a sign of things to come. Cooper will know the pressure on the fixture but it’s vital that the fanbase get behind him.
Cooper has praised the noise from the supporters in the first two home games and they will be vital. In fact, having the backing of the fanbase in the games against Everton, Bournemouth, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich – fixtures coming up in the next six – could be the difference.
Failure to build confidence and climb up the Premier League table across those fixtures, then maybe the criticism towards Cooper will be fair. But for now, let’s give him and the team a chance.
