It’s an exciting time to be a Swansea fan. With Luka Modric now a minority shareholder at the South Wales side, there will be a desire to see plenty of new faces through the door at the Swansea.com Stadium in the coming months.
However, if they are to get their hands on one player who starred while on loan for the club last season, then that will help continue an excellent start to the summer—but there’s competition from elsewhere in the Championship.
Swansea City face plenty of competition for Lewis O’Brien
Lewis O’Brien joined the Swans on loan for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign on deadline day in the January transfer window, and he quickly made his mark.

The midfielder, who arrived on loan from Nottingham Forest, hit the ground running and continued to improve throughout his time in Wales as Sheehan took charge. However, a report from the Hull Daily Mail has stated that Hull City are among a number of Championship sides interested in signing the 26-year-old.
Yet, back in May, director of football Richard Montague revealed his thoughts on re-signing O’Brien. He said (via BBC Sport), “We do know Lewis has loved his time here, and we have loved having him here.
“We’d love to have him back, but he’s under contract with Nottingham Forest, and it’s largely up to them what they choose to do. It’s something we’d really be open to, and we’d love to explore further, but ultimately when he’s contracted to another club, it’s not us in the driving seat.”
Lewis O’Brien is crucial to Alan Sheehan’s success
While O’Brien only had an impact over a small period of time, he was one of Swansea’s very best players last season, and he was influential to their turnaround in form.
The former Huddersfield Town midfielder was crucial to breaking up opposition attacks, winning 76.7% of his tackles, while he also had success in over half of the duels that he was involved in.

Hull now have their Champions League-experienced manager, Sergej Jakirovic, in place at the MKM Stadium, and as an unknown proposition, O’Brien may see it as a risk to join.
With Swansea, the out-of-favor Forest man is comfortable and knows the club. But he could face competition if Ethan Erhahon joins the Swans. Nevertheless, experience is vital in the Championship, and O’Brien must be the first choice for Sheehan this summer.
