Wolves are now about to embark on a favourable run of fixtures in the Premier League.
It has been an extremely tough start to the 2024/25 campaign, with Wanderers picking up just two points from their first nine games.
Most expected Wolves to be down near the bottom at this stage of the season. But some had hoped the club would be a little higher than 19th.
But things will hopefully now get a bit easier for Wolves, who have Crystal Palace, Southampton, Fulham and Bournemouth next in the league.
The next two games are both at Molineux, and they are simply a golden opportunity for Wolves to get their season going.
But for these coming games, four players are going to have Gary O’Neil a little worried.
Wolves quartet now one yellow card away from one-game ban
Wolves have enjoyed a yellow card this season.
So far after nine rounds of fixtures, the club sit joint-third in the yellow card table with 29, equating to just over three per game. Southampton have also picked up 29.
Only Chelsea (36) have picked up more.
Frustratingly for O’Neil, these 29 cards have not been as spread as he would have liked, because – as per official Premier League statistics – four of his players are now starting down the barrel of a one-match ban.
Rayan Ait-Nouri, Nelson Semedo, Toti Gomes and Joao Gomes have all picked up four yellow cards and are walking the proverbial tightrope.
These four players will need to get to and (through) the 19th game of the season to avoid that one-game ban.
O’Neil must address yellow card
To have four players already facing the prospect of a one-game ban is really poor from Wolves.
Granted, some of the yellow cards received by the four players will not have been cautions.
But O’Neil needs to talk to his squad about this issue, because there is potential for each of these players to now change the way they play due to the risk of getting a ban.
Wolves players | Number of bookings |
Semedo, Ait-Nouri, J.Gomes, Toti | 4 |
Mosquera, Lemina, Andre, Forbs, Sarabia | 2 |
Cunha, Strand Larsen, Bellegarde, Dawson, Doyle | 1 |
It is practically certain that all of Semedo, Ait-Nouri, Toti and Gomes will be serving one-match bans in the coming weeks and that will be very frustrating for O’Neil with winnable games coming up.
Realistically, as they’re all defenders, they are not going to play the next 10 games without picking up one more caution.
