Wayne Rooney documentary ‘may be scrapped’ as Plymouth make sack decision

Wayne Rooney's time as Plymouth Argyle boss is under serious threat, with the club's fans calling for him to go following Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Bristol City.

Wayne Rooney’s much-anticipated TV documentary is reportedly on the brink of being axed as the Manchester United icon battles to keep his managerial position at Plymouth Argyle. The former England captain, who took over the reins at Plymouth in the summer, has had a torrid first season in charge.

His own supporters demanded his resignation after a crushing 4-0 defeat to Bristol City on Saturday. This came hot on the heels of a 6-1 drubbing at Norwich last week, with previous heavy losses at Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday.

Rooney has yet to secure an away victory this season for Plymouth. They now precariously perch just two points above the Championship’s relegation zone.

Reports suggest that Rooney’s job is increasingly on the line as the season progresses. Adding to his woes, The Sun reports that the high-profile documentary, intended to chronicle Rooney’s transition from player to manager, is now under threat.

If Rooney’s tenure turns into a ‘horror show’, it’s possible that either the creators or Rooney himself might decide to pull the plug. The documentary is being produced by Lorton Entertainment, with aspirations of it landing on a major streaming platform.

However, these plans are now looking shaky at best, given Rooney’s uncertain future. The beleaguered manager expressed his fury at his team’s performance following Saturday’s thrashing at Ashton Gate.

Rooney has been backed by Plymouth’s hierarchy, however, as they pledged to support him through difficult times rather than pull the trigger and begin searching for a new head coach.

He was visibly dejected at Plymouth’s latest setback, candidly expressing his feelings: “Embarrassed really. That’s the right word to use. After what happened on Tuesday at Norwich, we came here with a gameplan to try and be in the game, for 50 minutes we were. We concede the first goal and we collapse.

“It’s exactly what happened at Norwich, it’s exactly what happened at Leeds. As soon as we concede a goal, the players out there collapse and we look very fragile. It’s very frustrating, disappointing.

“When we’re going through this run we’re going through with away games, you need to dig deep and find something within you. If them players want to have the career you hope they want to have they need to do that very quick because they’re not representing this club the right way.

“I’ve tried going at the players. I’ve tried encouraging and supporting them. I’ve tried everything really so I need to keep trying to find the right balance to fix the away performances.”

And while Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett has confirmed that there have been no discussions regarding his position at the club, discontent among fans is growing.

Fortunately for Rooney, Derby’s next opportunity comes at home against Oxford United, another side struggling to find form.
