Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney has claimed he is focused on bringing in more players in January despite pressure rising on his position following four successive defeats.
The Manchester United legend is under fire following a number of damaging losses – the latest being a 2-0 defeat Sheffield United on Saturday – leading to speculation he could be sacked after Argyle slipped to 23rd in the Championship table.
The team have been struggling with a huge injury list that includes keeper Conor Hazard, Joe Edwards, Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker and Muhamed Tijani and Rooney said he was prioritising recruits to bolster his ravaged squad.
“We know where we are at,” he said after the loss to the Blades. “We have got targets we want to bring in but it’s not always easy in January. For me, the most important thing is getting the four [injured] players back. That’s the main thing for me.”
“If we can get a couple, 2-3 players in, that will help as well. We are always looking. The game is both boxes so if we can tighten up at the back and have players available or bring players in to score more goals, that will give everyone a boost.”
Despite yet another loss, Rooney insisted his side were the better team on Saturday. He said: “We’re disappointed with the result. We didn’t feel we deserved to lose.
“A lot of our play was good. We controlled large portions but those missed opportunities, we need to do better. I’m always talking to the players about details.
“In recent away games when we’ve conceded we’ve caved in. “But we didn’t here. There was more resilience. It was clearly improved. I thought we were the better side in the second period as well [as the first]. But that’s football.”
Rooney has received a vote of confidence from chairman Simon Hallett, who stressed the club were not considering any moves to sack him.
