Birmingham City’s Marc Roberts re-joins Barnsley in League One

Marc Roberts has re-signed for Barnsley on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Birmingham City. This is not his first time in South Yorkshire – not only was the 33-year-old born in Barnsley, he also played for the Tykes between the years of 2015 and 2017, making 72 league appearances and scoring five goals along the way.

This follows a seven-year stint with the Blues, who suffered relegation to League One at the end of the 2023/24 season. During his time at St. Andrews, Roberts played in 186 Championship games and scored seven goals. Now aged 33, his best years may be behind him – but a return to his old stomping grounds could be an ideal move for him.

In an interview featured on Barnsley’s official club website, Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz said: “We are extremely pleased to bring Marc back to Oakwell. We felt that a player of Marc’s calibre and experience was too good to not bring to Barnsley, with over 200 Championship appearances and a promotion from this division on his CV.

“Marc knows what it takes to have success at Oakwell, and we look forward to bringing his qualities into the changing room working with our coaching staff.”
