Wolves supporters are familiar with transfer flops and for many, Fabio Silva is at the summit of that list.
Wolves captured an 18-year-old Fabio Silva from Porto for a staggering sum of £35 million in the summer of 2020, as Nuno Espirito Santo took a huge gamble on the teenager.
Silva was previously compared to the great Cristiano Ronaldo and supporters were hyped to see the talented striker in gold however, he’s emphatically failed to live up to his lofty expectations.
The Portuguese striker has scored just five goals in 72 appearances for the Wanderers and in the summer, Silva was loaned out to La Liga side Las Palmas where he’s since flourished.
With three goals in nine league appearances, the 22-year-old has nearly matched his Wolves goal tally in 63 fewer matches.
Wolves are planning to offload Fabio Silva despite Las Palmas form
While Sevilla were made to regret not signing Silva, Las Palmas were the beneficiaries as they were able to loan the striker late in the transfer window.
Despite his recent resurgence in Spain, though, sources close to Molineux News have said that Wolves ‘want him off the wage bill’ regardless of whether his fine form continues.
If the Old Gold manage to sell Silva, whose contract expires in 2026, there’s no chance they’ll recoup what they paid for him.
That said, should he continue to fire in the goals ahead of next summer, sources suggest there are clubs in Spain and Portugal who would take him, with the striker perhaps joining Las Palmas permanently.
Wolves biggest flops of all time
Wolves can be commended for the work they’ve done in the transfer window recently, unearthing gems such as Joao Gomes and Rayan Ait-Nouri as two examples.
But as shown with the signing of Silva, there have also been as many players who have flopped in Wolverhampton, including striker Patrick Cutrone.
The Italian striker was signed from AC Milan for £23 million in 2019, and although he only scored three in 28 appearances for the Wanderers, Cutrone is now in fine form for Serie A side Como.
Silva and Cutrone are joined by further names in the list of flops, including Paul Gladon, Ki-Jana Hoever, Roderick Miranda, and Leo Bonatini who have failed or are failing to make in the grade at Molineux in the case of Hoever.
