Wigan Athletic centre-back Will Aimson is a major injury doubt for this weekend’s game against Stockport County, Shaun Maloney says.
Wigan Athletic haven’t had the easiest of starts to the season but summer signing Aimson has made a great impression since joining.
The midweek win over Peterborough United was only the Latics’ third of the League One campaign but they are now unbeaten in five, drawing three consecutive games 0-0 and beating Bristol Rovers 4-0 in the games prior to the Posh triumph.
Aimson has been central to this run of five straight clean sheets but in the wake of the Tuesday night win, concern has been raised over a blow to the new star.
Now, with a clash against Stockport County awaiting, Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney is sweating on his centre-back’s availability. Speaking to Wigan Today, the manager said a late decision will have to be made on Aimson after taking a hefty challenge against Peterborough.
“Will is struggling a little bit, from a tackle he took in the Peterborough game,” he said.
“We’ll make a late decision on him, and it would be a blow to lose him.”
In his absence…
Thankfully for Wigan Athletic, as Maloney would go on to say himself, there are players who can slot straight into the backline if Aimson is forced to the sidelines against Stockport County.
Both James Carragher and Toby Sibbick came on off the bench against Peterborough United and will be ready to come into the starting XI this weekend if required.
Captain Jason Kerr will almost certainly retain his spot, so it will be down to Maloney to decide who partners him if Aimson sits out.
Kicking on
Wigan Athletic might not have started quite as strongly as hoped but things have tightened up at the back and their form looks to have turned. The 3-0 win over Peterborough United is one that could really breathe life into the campaign for the Latics.
A trip to Stockport County will pose challenges though, so Maloney’s side will have to be on their game.
The Hatters’ momentum has slowed somewhat after a fantastic start to life in League One but after four games without a win, they defeated strugglers Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.
