Wolves hatch new plan to counter fan backlash after ‘huge mistake’ – Ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Wolves have been forced to slash kit prices after “losing a lot of goodwill” with fans.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed fan pressure has “kept the club honest” after backlash stemming from a planned increase in season ticket prices.

Wolves announced their new kit deal with SUDU last week (27 June), promising to price shirts at £58 and £80 for replica and pro jerseys respectively.

The Midlands club faced protests from their fans earlier this summer after proposing increases in season ticket pricing – plans which were eventually scrapped after a petition got 15,000 signatures.

Chairman Jeff Shi had said that commercial growth was “vital” for the football club’s sustainability and competitiveness.

Fan pressure ‘keeps Wolves honest’ as kit deal announced, says Wyness

But Wyness claimed Wolves have been forced to reverse their “aggressive” strategy after fan backlash.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The Wolves fans were very unhappy about ticket prices increasing.

“They put up strong resistance to that, and the club backtracked.

“Full respect to the fanbase for that. Wolves made a huge mistake by being so aggressive, and I think this kit deal is a knock-on from that.

“They know they have to keep the fans on side because they lost a lot of goodwill.

“It will be up to the manufacturer and club to sit down and decide on a price.

“I think the fan pressure has kept Wolves honest here and means the increase will be less than expected.”
