Wolves have struck gold with £16m player as great news from Molineux emerges

Wolves signed three new players in January to hopefully set the club on the path to Premier League survival.

It has been a rough season for the most part for Wolves, and Vitor Pereira is tasked with righting the wrongs of the Gary O’Neil reign and keeping the club in the top-flight.

It’s been a decent start so far for Pereira, who’s won three of his eight Premier League games so far. He’s also guided Wolves into the fourth round of the FA Cup, with Blackburn Rovers up next on Sunday.

One of the biggest issues this season for Wolves has been the defense.

Wolves have really struggled to keep clean sheets and have conceded a whopping 52 goals in 24 matches.

But Wolves now have Emmanuel Agbadou in their ranks, and today, the Ivorian warrior has received some good news.

Agbadou joined Wolves for just over £16 million (BBC Sport) from Reims on January 9.

Just days after signing, Agbadou made his debut for Wolves against Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the FA Cup – and put in an assured performance.

Agbadou has made four further appearances for Wolves and has made a real impact on the backline.

And fans have very much liked what they’ve seen because today, Wolves have announced the star as the winner of the club’s Player of the Month award for January.

He won with 34% of the public vote, beating Joao Gomes (21%), Rodrigo Gomes (15%) and Matt Doherty (10%).

Wolves have struck gold with Agbadou

To put into context how good and consistent Agbadou has been so far, the 27-year-old is already the second-highest ranked Wolves player according to WhoScored.

He has an average rating of 6.93—only Matheus Cunha has a higher rating with 7.35.

It has undoubtedly been a solid start for Agbadou, despite Wolves going on a bit of a poor run before the win over Aston Villa. New signing Marshall Munetsi has suggested every top team needs a player like Agbadou, and fans are already seeing his quality.

He is just a solid out-and-out defender with good mobility and an understanding of where he needs to be.

He’s mostly played on the left so far, but he’s still done well there. Against Villa though, he moved into the middle with Toti Gomes playing on the left, and that already looks like an excellent formula.

Wolves have struck gold with Agbadou because to show this kind of level having barely been at the club for a month is really impressive. Especially when mostly playing in a slightly unnatural position as well.

He represents a big win for Matt Hobbs and the recruitment team, and hopefully he will help Wolves navigate away from the relegation zone.
