Wolves are still no closer to finding a replacement for captain Max Kilman but there is one ‘sensational’ talent they should target.
Kilman was sold to West Ham for £40 million earlier on in the window as Wolves were prepared to cash in on their captain.
The 27-year-old was an integral figure in Gary O’Neil’s defence last term, featuring for every single minute in the Premier League, a feat only matched by William Saliba.
Whilst supporters weren’t sad to see him depart after six years, the Old Gold still need to find a solid replacement for him, especially after receiving £54 million for Pedro Neto from Chelsea.
Luckily, there is one talented defender from the Premier League who could be the perfect replacement for Kilman.
Wolves should try for Joe Gomez as he wants to leave Liverpool
Joe Gomez was left out of Liverpool’s squad for their trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday, with Fabrizio Romano confirming he’s ‘looking at his options’ for the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.
The talented defender – described as ‘sensational’ by former manager Jurgen Klopp – has recently attracted interest from Midlands rivals Aston Villa, who themselves are looking to sign a centre-back.
Gomez played a massive part in Klopp’s dominance at Liverpool, winning almost every trophy there is to win, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
The 15-time England international has made 224 appearances for the Reds since arriving in 2015 while battling competition from the likes of Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate for a spot alongside Virgil van Dijk.
But now it appears his glittering career at Anfield is coming to an end and Wolves should do everything in their power to bring him to Molineux this summer.
Gomez is the perfect defender for Wolves
O’Neil likes his defenders to be versatile and Gomez is the epitome of that phrase, with the 27-year-old showing he can play anywhere across the back three, as a right back or left back.
The highly experienced operator is also skilled with the ball at his feet. As highlighted by FBref, in the past year the Englishman has averaged an 82.6% pass completion and 4.89 progressive passes per game.
For comparison, Kilman only posted 3.11 progressive passes per game, which proves Gomez is better at caressing passes into dangerous areas of the pitch.
Of course, given Wolves’ transfer situation, they may not be able to afford the Liverpool star however, he’s certainly someone who would significantly improve their defence.
Also, he currently earns £85k-a-week at Liverpool, which would make him the second-highest earner at Wolves, behind only Nelson Semedo and Goncalo Guedes.
But, in the Reds’ relentless dominance, he’s more than proven his worth over the years and signing for O’Neil could give him a new lease of life.
