Although the January transfer window is now closed, Wolves’ transfer business doesn’t look to have quite finished just yet.
The Old Gold enjoyed a busy mid-season window. Although Mario Lemina left to re-join Galatasaray, several additions were made.
Wolves signed Emmanuel Agbadou at the start of the window and then added Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga on deadline day.
And following their decision to bring in two new center-backs, one player is now in talks to leave.
Wolves in talks to terminate Craig Dawson’s contract
Unsurprisingly, Craig Dawson’s time in the Midlands appears to be coming to an end.
The 34-year-old was signed by Gary O’Neil one year ago but has barely featured in Vitor Pereira’s plans, and with several center-backs above him in the pecking order, now has no future at Molineux.
According to the Express and Star’s Liam Keen, the Wolves owners are in discussions with Dawson to terminate his contract five months ahead of schedule.
Should the two parties reach an agreement, Dawson will become a free agent and be able to negotiate with clubs at home and abroad.
Vitor Pereira confirms his plans
Even though Pereira’s decision comes as no surprise, the 56-year-old’s brutal honesty will leave fans feeling for Dawson.
Confirming the ex-West Ham defender has absolutely no place in his plans, Pereira said: “I gave the information in advance to the club that if we bring in another center-back, I will not have space for Craig in the squad.
“This is something that I spoke with the club about for a long time. I had a conversation with the player, and I respect the player a lot, and I respect his career, but his profile is not the profile that I’m looking to build the team around.”
Going on to explain his decision is purely a football one, Pereira added: “It’s about profile; I spoke with the player; I explained the reasons; and now it is something that the club must solve.
“As a coach, I need to be honest with the players. I need to say what I think because for the player with his career to be here without playing, just training, it’s not a good situation.
“He is talking with the club (to become a free agent). It is an issue that he must solve between him and the club.”
Since joining Wolves, Dawson, who earns £45,000-a-week (Capology), has featured in 61 games in all competitions, scoring two and assisting one.
