Nils Koppen must ‘solve Ianis Hagi headache’ after Rangers transfer news

The position Rangers have found themselves in this term is undoubtedly linked to what has been happening behind the scenes at Ibrox.

The Scottish Premiership club has been run poorly, and the Gers have found themselves in a position too often where their transfer business has left them in a precarious financial position.

The Light Blues now find themselves sitting second in the table but a massive 10 points behind Celtic in the top spot.

One man who was linked with a move away from Ibrox late in the winter transfer window is Ianis Hagi, who has had to fight his way back into contention in recent months after being exiled from the squad in the summer amid a contract dispute.

However, things have been resolved, and since returning to the side, the Romanian international has proven to be a key player for the Light Blues, and Philippe Clement will be pleased to still have him in his ranks.

That being said, it has been reported that Hagi is one step away from leaving Rangers in the summer transfer window for Serie A side Genoa [Pescurt, 5 February].

Rangers need to secure Ianis Hagi on a new contract

The 26-year-old has three goals and five assists from 15 league games this term, showing the influence he is able to have in the side, and Clement will certainly not underestimate the value of this.

However, as it stands, if Hagi does leave in the summer transfer window, the Gers will find themselves missing out on a good deal once again with his contract expiring in the summer.

With this in mind, Nils Koppen has to consider his side’s future and ensure that the attacker signs a new deal with the club that would at least allow them to cash in on Hagi in the summer window if they decide to sell.

Given his past with the Light Blues, the 26-year-old may well decide that his future lies away from Ibrox and opt for a move to Genoa, but Rangers have to start being smart and protecting themselves in the transfers of their assets.

A new deal would not ensure the extended stay of Hagi in Glasgow but it would certainly show supporters that those are the top of the club are starting to learn from past mistakes.

Whether they could get him to commit to new terms remains to be seen but sorting out a new deal is a priority for Koppen, who must solve this Hagi headache.
