Derby County ace told he did ‘something special’ by sealing ‘perfect’ transfer to Pride Park

Derby County made a shrewd signing in the summer, and the player arriving at Pride Park has gone on to do something pretty special.

Jumping from League One to the Championship dictated that Derby County would have to reinforce their squad, with players coming and going all summer.

Paul Warne has recruited well, it seems, and the Rams are currently sitting relatively comfortably in 12th place in the Championship table.

One acquisition made by Warne over the summer has provided stability to the whole team, and has got one former Premier League player very excited for what it means to his country.

Jacob Widell Zetterstrom joined a big club in Derby County

26-year-old Jacob Widell Zetterstrom left his native Sweden and Djurgarden behind to join Derby in the summer, and has proven to be quite the revelation in goal for the Rams.

Discussing his compatriot’s move to England, former West Brom and Wigan defender Jonas Olsson told BBC Sport that it is a pretty big deal for a Swedish goalkeeper to be playing outside of his homeland, and that the move to Derby was an important one for Zetterstrom.

He said: “For a keeper to move abroad, that’s something special. We don’t have a lot of Swedish goalkeepers who play abroad. I think there’s like three or four, so obviously the focus on him is greater.

“To move to England, and a big club like Derby, it was perfect for him. It feels like a very good move so far.”

Derby County can bring out the best in Zetterstrom

While Zetterstrom clearly arrived at Derby with bags of quality, he was never going to be the best he could be while playing in Sweden.

The Championship is one of the most competitive and wildly unpredictable leagues in world football, and there are so many more eyes on players in the English second tier, too. That kind of pressure and prominence will bring out the best in Zetterstrom, as he deals with the ups and downs of Championship football.

Zetterstrom has made a fantastic start to life in England, and will only continue to get better as the season goes on and Derby really find their feet at this level. If he keeps up his trajectory, there is no doubt that Zetterstrom will end up playing in the Premier League.

At 26, Zetterstrom has not even begun to even enter his peak years as a goalkeeper, so he can easily afford to spend a couple of years in the Championship with Derby, learning and growing, before he makes that step up; he may even get there with the Rams, who knows?
