Gary O’Neil drops concerning hint on Wolves’ future transfer policy

Wolves’ transfer policy has caused widespread debate amongst the Molineux faithful over recent seasons.

Since the end of the 2022/23 campaign, it is not an understatement to suggest that Wolves have been careful with their spending.

Over the past year, many of the Old Gold’s biggest stars have left the club, with the record departure fee being broken three times.

This saw increased frustrations from the Molineux faithful this summer after it took until deadline day for Wolves to splash the cash brought in from the Pedro Neto and Max Kilman sales.

However, despite millions of pounds being brought into the club to ease financial concerns, Gary O’Neil has now dropped a hint that big-spending transfer windows may be a thing of the past.

Upon their promotion to the Premier League, Wolves brought in many eye-catching signings.

In their first window, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez all joined the Old Gold.

A similar trend continued over the proceeding seasons with the likes of Neto, Nelson Semedo and Matheus Cunha all joining for big fees.

However, over recent campaigns, Wolves have spent little and often have a positive net spend thanks to their outgoings.

While FFP issues have surrounded Wolves in the past, O’Neil has now dropped a potential hint that big-spending windows will now be a thing of the past.

“The transfer windows now for Wolves are not what they were. [Ruben] Neves, Matheus Cunha, and Mario [Lemina] arrived for big fees. It’s different,” he said.

“The excitement for me now is we know where we are now, we have opportunity to upset what people expect from us this year.”

If Fosun do decide to go down this route, they cannot expect to survive in the Premier League for very long.

If you compare Wolves’ net spend to their fellow Premier League rivals this summer, few have a positive figure, and only Man City and Liverpool brought in more money than the Old Gold.

Since this policy came in last summer, fans could make a good argument that the squad has now also worsened with the departures of Neto, Neves and Kilman.

While Wolves may not go down in this campaign, if Fosun does not spend, relegation will be confirmed sooner rather than later.
