‘It’s on the table’… Philippe Clement hints at Rangers deal for Scotland international

Rangers should always look to sign the best domestic talent with two current key players under Philippe Clement proving why.

Bosman deals are the best way to add depth to the squad and a budget friendly way to increase the homegrown quota for UEFA competitions.

The manager has spoken at length about Connor Barron, but it is John Souttar who the Rangers boss has been praising and hinting at the possibility of a new contract.

John Souttar set for Rangers contract talks

The Scotland international endured a torrid time in his first two seasons at the club but has now settled into place as first choice centre-half.

He has also emerged as his country’s best defender too, proving against Portugal, Croatia and Poland that Steve Clarke was wrong to leave him out the squad for the European Championships.

“It’s on the table and it’s progressed when things are arranged,” Clement said about the chances of a new contract for Souttar.

“So that’s not the case yet. So, we will see what’s going to happen next couple of months. He still has more than one year and a half to go. But he knows that I’m happy with the evolution he made and it shows also in his play.”

Is Souttar the best defender in Scotland?

Clement was coy when asked if the Rangers No.5 was the best defender in Scotland:

“I don’t want to compare with other teams because yet again I don’t have any control of how they are performing. But for sure he’s been our best defender this season, the most regular one in our team. And he progressed really well. Not only in his duels, what he had before already, but he became stronger in that, but also in his handling of the ball,” praised the Gers boss.

“And he made a really, really big progression in that way. So we still see things that we can make better, that we want to make better together. He’s also critical in that way with himself. But I’m really happy with what he’s been showing in total.”

Souttar has always been a good player, however, the issues with concentration still rear their ugly head, not as often as they once did, but until he eradicates them completely, there will be elements of the Rangers support who don’t rate him quite as highly as Clement.
