Kodai Senga has triceps tightness

Kodai Senga, undoubtedly the Mets’ ace last year and coming into spring training this year, was scheduled to throw a bullpen yesterday but didn’t end up doing so because of triceps tightness. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that the team is not concerned and expects him to throw a bullpen later this week.

The update is the latest in a string of not-so-positive news about Senga’s recovery from a shoulder issue that saw him shut down very early in spring training. Last week, as he was working toward starting a rehab assignment, Senga reportedly needed to deal with a “mechanical issue” that was keeping him from throwing comfortably. That update always sounded a bit like cover for bad injury news, and well, here we are.

Last year, Senga threw 166.1 innings in his first season in Major League Baseball and earned both Rookie of the Year and Cy Young votes as he finished the season with a 2.98 ERA. And while some of the Mets’ starting pitchers have pitched pretty well this year, the rotation as a whole has not been a strength in Senga’s absence. Mets starting pitchers have a 4.52 ERA that ranks 24th in baseball.
