Unai Emery shares team news update ahead of Aston Villa v Bayern Munich, new blow emerges

Unai Emery has revealed that Matty Cash will not feature for Aston Villa in the latest blow ahead of the Bayern Munich clash on Wednesday (2 October).

The Villans welcome the Bundesliga giants to Villa Park in the Champions League as both look to make it two wins from two in the league phase.

Villa struggled down the right-hand side against Ipswich Town as Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos were exposed at times on Sunday (29 September).

There was hope that Cash would be in contention to return in Europe’s elite competition after suffering an injury but Emery has revealed, as shared by the club via X [1 October], that the Poland international will miss out.

He said: “Matty is starting to train with us but for tomorrow, he is not going to be available.”

Emery, also without John McGinn, added: “[Boubacar] Kamara and Tyrone Mings are training but also not going to play tomorrow.”

Matty Cash to miss Aston Villa v Bayern Munich

The 27-year-old has only started two games so far this season but was substituted through injury against both West Ham and Arsenal.

In the clash at the London Stadium on the opening day, his performance was positive as he kept up an 85 per cent pass accuracy while completing 29 passes with 57 touches [FotMob].

The right-back looked forward where possible, which saw him complete one long ball, but that didn’t stop him from completing 11 defensive actions while winning five duels.

Throughout the last year, Cash has maintained an average of 2.12 tackles, 1.28 blocks and 2.90 interceptions per 90 [Fbref].

That places him among the top 63 per cent, 62 per cent and 39 per cent respectively of all full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past 12 months.

Konsa struggled at right-back last time out against Ipswich and that saw him fail to register a tackle and just three defensive actions throughout the 90 minutes [FotMob].

Given the attacking talent that Bayern have, including the likes of Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and fit-again Harry Kane, Villa need to be at their best at the back.

It is disappointing that Cash won’t feature at Villa Park against the Germans but there is hope he makes his return soon.
