Wolves bought Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2022 and now the latest details have emerged on the finances behind his move.

Wolves captured Matheus Nunes from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in 2022 for a club record ยฃ42 million.

The 25-year-old went on to have a successful first season at Molineux, appearing 34 times in the Premier League.

Nunes played an integral role in the Wanderers engine room, ranking in the top 10% of midfielders in the top flight for successful take-ons and the top 20% for tackles won.

As a result, he caught the eye of Europeโ€™s elite as Pep Guardiolaโ€™s Manchester City snapped him up for ยฃ53 million just a year after joining the Midlands side.

While that amount of money represented a profit at a time they needed it most, it has now emerged that Wolves have just had to pay millions for a player they no longer own.

Wolves told to pay a 10% sell-on fee for Matheus Nunes According to the Portuguese outlet Leonino, there was an agreement put in place

in the sale of Nunes to Wolves that required the Premier League side to pay Sporting 10% of the profit they made on him.

Of course, after leaving for Man City in the summer, this meant the Wanderers had to shell out an extra โ‚ฌ2.4 million (ยฃ2 million), as detailed in their financial report.

It has turned out to be a clever move from the Lisbon side to insert that agreement in his contract as theyโ€™ve just profited even further from the deal, despite selling him 18 months ago.

Nunes hasnโ€™t been missed as much as supporters thought he would have been

after departing for the Etihad last summer as the emergence of Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina as a partnership softened that blow.

Nonetheless, the Portuguese superstar โ€“ whom Guardiola described as one of the best players in the world โ€“ is still a supremely talented midfielder.

How is Matheus Nunes getting on at Man City?

Nunes knew that with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva to compete with, competition for places would be strong in an advanced midfield role.

Despite this, Nunes has featured 20 times in all competitions and assisted four goals.

As seen with players previously, it normally takes a year for a new signing at City to adapt to Guardiolaโ€™s demands.

The same happened with Jack Grealish, Silva and Rodri upon their rivals at the club, so the former Wolves man can be happy with the impact heโ€™s made so far.
