Everton tried to sign BALLON D’OR winner in 2009 😮

Michael Owen has revealed that he could have joined Everton in 2009.

Michael Owen was born in Chester and grew up as an Everton fan, with his father Terry Owen spending five years with the club.

Despite supporting the Toffees, Owen joined Liverpool’s academy in 1991 and went onto spend the next 13 years at Anfield.

The former striker netted 158 goals in 297 appearances for the Reds and won the Ballon d’Or, Premier League Golden Boot (twice), Premier League Player of the Season and more.

Owen was eventually sold to Real Madrid in 2004, before returning to the Premier League with Newcastle United the following year.

He scored 30 goals in 79 games for the Magpies, before leaving Tyneside on a free transfer. Owen went onto make the controversial move to Manchester United, but has since admitted that he also had the option to join Everton.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video yesterday (27 December, 19:13), Owen said: “Well yeah actually one of my options at the time was Everton, when I left Newcastle. I was on a bosman transfer.

“Of course, the first person I picked the phone up to I tried to get back to Liverpool of course. But when they had already said that they were full up in that position then of course you look around.

David Moyes was one person I met and if Sir Alex [Ferguson] hadn’t have called me then who knows. I was an Everton fan as a kid, you know.”

Should Everton have signed Michael Owen?

Michael Owen was undeniably one of the best strikers the Premier League has seen, but Everton wouldn’t have been getting the striker that shone at Anfield and won the Ballon d’Or.

The former England international was 30 years old when he left Newcastle and went onto bag 17 goals in 52 games for Manchester United.

Owen says he was a boyhood fan of Everton, but he went onto spend a majority of his career with their fierce rivals, so it certainly wouldn’t have been something that the Toffees supporters would have taken lightly.

Everton didn’t bring in particularly exciting alternatives though, signing both James Beattie and Marcus Bent that summer instead. The pair scored 23 goals in 152 games for Everton.
